NBA Comparison: Clifford Robinson
Strengths: A very smart and versatile big man which makes for quite an intriguing combination...Unlike
most big men likes to play facing the basket rather than with his back towards it...Has college three point range and shoots
with decent accuracy (38%), and would seem to have no trouble adjusting to the NBA three point line...Spots up extremely well
and finds his places in the offense quickly...Fairly good mid-range shooter...Above average defender. Moves his feet fairly
well, and really makes very savvy plays (a la Robert Horry "tipping the ball away"), and generally keeps his man in front
of him, even in defensive rotations...High defensive IQ, every time he's on the court it looks like overall team defense increases...Very
good passer as well especially from the high post. Good court vision and sometimes Montana simply runs their offense through
him; seems to have eyes all around him, aware of movements, defenders' positions, etc., that he can do behind-the-back passes
relatively easily...A lot of assists per game...Quite a versatile player in the sense that he can be used as SF...Decent transition
player...
Weaknesses: Sometimes looks like a SG trapped in a PF's body, with the way he plays, shooting from
the perimeter and getting assists...Has been chastised for being a "soft" player in the past, and probably still is as he
does not really relish contact...Rarely plays in the post, and when he does, his game there is so unrefined and ineffective...Doesn't
look to rebound the ball often. Only got 0.5 more rebounds than assists, which shows how horrible his rebounding is; Montana
constantly got outrebounded by other (even weaker) teams...Not an explosive scorer, just a serviceable one who gets his shots
within the flow of the game; can't really create his own shot...Not the best shooter either; can be streaky with his mid-range/outside
shots...Decent athleticism for the NBA, but really nothing special; rarely utilizes his athleticism on offense, it is more
prevalent on his defensive movements...Quite a foul prone player...Free throw shooting (64%) needs work...For his height he
should be able to create mismatches, but hasn't really done that in the college level...Doesn't really play at a top-notch
school, so his competition can arouse criticism at times...
Bio: Born in Helena, Montana, and earned a basketball scholarship primarily due to his height out
of high school (6'8") and has grown 2 inches since then and become one of the better basketball players in the NCAA...Overcame
a lot of adversity as a child, used basketball as a retreat...Had a couple of good games (22 points--UCLA) and (28 points--Syracuse)
against top-tier teams...
