NBA Comparison: Rafer Alston
Strengths: Excellent ballhandling guard who has shown some ability to run a team when he is playing
at full confidence and with a level head...Has proficient half-court playmaking skills and sees plays before they develop,
capable of firing passes at all angles and showing crafty and creative passing ability...Excellent quickness and nifty first
step often puts defenses at their heels when used...Solid transition game player...Solid slasher with an array of floaters
and nifty penetration ability to avoid defenders...Quite an athletic point guard with a long wingspan (6'7") helping him to
reach passing lanes, snag dribbles, interfere with ballhandlers and get steals; can be a nice perimeter defensive asset when
motivated...A very capable shooter (but see weaknesses) who can get hot in spurts especially from three point range, has also
shown some ability to knock down mid-range jumpshots...Excels when the defense is drawn away from him, likes to hit standstill
jumpshots...Has toned down his game vastly from his freshman year (but see weaknesses) and seems more receptive to coaching...Hasn't
exactly put it all together but if he can be reached he can be potentially a two-way player with shooting, passing and defensive
potential...
Weaknesses: Has a lot of exaggerated motion in his jumpshot, tends to tilt back in his release or
jump forward after shooting the ball...Tends to fade away a bit too much in his jumpshot to the point where it becomes a habit...Has
trouble adapting to defenses in his jumpshot, doesn't get his shot off really well with his lack of height, elevation and
changing shooting mechanics...Has some tendency to become selfish in shooting at times but even so still doesn't exactly manage
to be a proficient scorer; only an average scorer...Selfishness and shot selection lower his shooting percentages (39% this
year)...Defense is on and off but still makes an impact with his wingspan, simply needs more motivation...Has received a lot
of hype out of high school after producing stellar numbers there, but hasn't really lived up to the expectations just yet
at Wisconsin...Game showed a double-edged sword at college: freshman year, he was extremely aggressive, wild and taking shots
and making passes without abandon, but sophomore year became extremely complacent and a bit mild...Regressed from his
freshman year a bit, may look lost at times and even find it hard to execute simple plays such as pick and rolls and cutting
passes when not mentally up to the challenge...Has a tendency to disappear during gameplay and not step up to the challenge
of helping his team when they are in trouble, made all the more important since he is a lead guard...NBA size and weight are
concerns, may need to put in 10-15 more lbs...Older than the average sophomore...
